Keysight/Agilent 34905A RF Multiplexer Module for 34970A/34972A
The Keysight/Agilent 34905A is a 2-GHz dual 1:4 RF multiplexer (MUX), which is designed to be installed in either the Keysight 34970A or Keysight 34972A Data Acquisition Mainframe to switch signals at frequencies up to 2 GHz. Each bank has a center conductor, which is switched by the MUX to allow each of the four ports to be routed to the common port. This design preserves the signal quality as it passes through the MUX, especially when working with high-frequency or pulsed signals. The direct SMB connector installation supports all of the 2 GHz usable bandwidth of the module. However, the supplied BNC-to-SMB adapter does have limitations as far as supported bandwidth is concerned and reduces the available bandwidth of the module to 1 GHz; however, the use of the adapter makes it easier to connect to most existing instrumentation. Users are able to add additional modules to increase their number of channels and will be able to achieve a total channel count of 16:1 using multiple 34905A modules within a single mainframe chassis.
The 34905A also includes a functional test certificate and ten 50 ohm SMB-to-BNC cables to provide users with a complete solution for integrating the multiplexer into their automated test systems. The provided cables help to minimize the amount of reflection loss that occurs at the BNC interface, and they provide a simple method for making connections from the module to such devices as generators, analyzers, and oscilloscopes. Once installed in either a 34970A or 34972A mainframe, the 34905A works in conjunction with the internal DMM and firmware scanning capabilities of the mainframe to form a compact measurement system capable of measuring both RF and mixed-signal measurements.
Production test engineers who work in industrial automation use the RF Multiplexer Module to route RF and pulsed signals during production test operations. As part of this process, manual cable swapping is eliminated and device characterization time is reduced. A typical usage scenario would include switching antenna feeds to a single spectrum analyzer, connecting sequential filters or amplifiers for gain and return loss measurements, and cycling calibration standards during vector network analyzer tests. The programmable control options provided by controlling the mainframe's interface or sending SCPI commands allow users to automate their test sequences. Automating their test sequences helps to eliminate operator errors and increases repeatability. Using the ability to cascade channels and preserve stubless signal paths, users are able to perform highly efficient multi-channel testing without having to install external switch boxes. In addition, users are able to consolidate their RF test resources within their manufacturing environment.
