Keysight/Agilent 34947A SPDT Unterminated Microwave Switch Module for 34980A
The 34947A from Keysight/Agilent is one of several interchangeable modules for the 34980A mainframe. The 34947A has a total of three independent single-pole double-throw (SPDT) unterminated microwave switches. These are all based on the N1810UL switch core. Bidirectional routing of signals is possible over a bandwidth of DC to 26.5 GHz, with a fixed characteristic impedance of 50 ohms. At an insertion loss of less than 0.42 dB at 4 GHz, 0.69 dB at 20 GHz, and 0.8 dB at 26.5 GHz and greater than 60 dB isolation, the 34947A does meet the requirements for many applications. A less than or equal to 1.15 voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR) is maintained up to 4 GHz, a 1.3 VSWR up to 20 GHz, and a 1.6 VSWR at the upper limit. All connections utilize standard SMA cables and adapters with options available to add N1810UL SMA extenders to each connection point. The Keysight 34939A is another option in the same family for users who require different channel density arrangements.
This Microwave Switch Module was designed for use in automated test systems, and it features 6 cross points with unterminated paths. Internal load pathing would reduce signal integrity. Each channel can accept a maximum of 7 volts as an input voltage. Input/output voltages range from 0 to 50 volts. The module can operate in frequencies ranging from 18.1 GHz to 50 GHz depending on the specific switch configuration used. As such, it is well suited for many RF/microwave applications requiring low insertion loss and high isolation. When building large-scale switching matrixes, users will likely consider using either the 34939A or the 34947A side by side in their system, since they are compatible with the same base chassis as the 34980A.
Some typical uses for the Keysight/Agilent Microwave Switch Module include multi-band receiver/transmitter testing where the three SPDT switches enable the routing of multiple signal sources to a single DUT. In addition, engineers have utilized the 34947A for automated microwave component characterization, antenna switching, and as a means of providing shared access to instruments in production line environments. Due to its unique triple 1x2 configuration design, the Microwave Switch Module can provide redundant signal paths and dynamically reallocate ports as needed. While the 34939A utilizes a different switch topology yet is compatible with the same mainframe as the 34947A, the latter remains one of the top choices for DC to 26.5 GHz unterminated switching in the aerospace/defense/test & measurement industries.
