Keysight/Agient 34950A Digital I/O with Memory and Counter for 34980A
The Keysight/Agilent 34950A multi-function unit for the 34980A mainframe has 64 bi-directional digital I/O lines that can be configured as eight (8) 8-bit channels, which have programmable polarity and input threshold levels adjustable from 0 to +5 volts. This wide range of input thresholds will allow you to directly interface with all logic families such as TTL, CMOS, and others. Hardware is divided into two independent banks, each having 64 Kbytes of volatile pattern memory so that digital sequence patterns can be captured or generated at speeds up to 10 MHz. It also supports hardware interrupts for deterministic action in time-critical automation loop applications.
In addition to the basic I/O that the 34950A does, there are two (2) frequency counter/totalizers on board. These two (2) devices will count frequency, period, duty cycle, pulse width, and totalize event counts. In essence these two (2) devices will eliminate the need for additional counter instruments. There is also a programmable divide-by-n clock output available. This feature is designed to synchronize frequencies with other peripheral devices or be used as a general timing reference. Each bank has up to seven (7) configurable handshake protocols available via three (3) dedicated pins. Users will be able to transfer data synchronously with analog-to-digital converters (ADC), digital-to-analog converters (DAC), and/or serial buses. At a toggle rate of 20 MHz and a pattern memory operating speed of 10 MHz, this device will excel in high-speed stimulus/response testing and digital pattern simulation.
Industry automation engineers have been employing the 34950A in order to perform digital bus monitoring and protocol emulations and actuate control functions in automated test equipment and production lines. Its pattern memory can generate the required stimulus vectors and capture the required response data when performing functional validation tests. Additionally, its handshake protocols will enable synchronous communications with embedded controller functions. The built-in counters will monitor encoder pulses, measure sensor frequencies, or totalize production counts without requiring additional hardware. This module was developed to be housed in the 34980A mainframe but may also be used separately. When used in combination with the Digital I/O Mainframe, this compact high-density module will reduce system complexity and footprint compared to using multiple individual modules. As a result of these features, the 34950A is considered a practical option for applications for data acquisition and functional test stations in various industries.
