The Keysight/Agilent U2123A USB digital I/O module is a low-cost, space-saving option for use in industrial automation and control systems. It offers 32 optically isolated digital outputs (lines) designed to safeguard both the host PC and control circuitry from voltage spikes (transients) and electrical shorts (ground loops) that are commonly found on factory floors. Due to its full-speed USB 2.0 interface compliance with TMC-488.2 standards, this unit can be installed into virtually any PC environment without having to open the case. With its minimal size footprint, this unit will fit into even the smallest of spaces and provide reliable performance in the most adverse of environments.
In addition to providing programmable power-up states (logic states when the system first boots or comes online via a USB cable), this digital I/O device also includes Keysight's DIO Diagnostics software, allowing developers to utilize a variety of development environments such as Keysight VEE, NI LabVIEW, and Microsoft Visual Studio. As a result, the developer has complete control over how they program their application. Additionally, programmable power-up states allow users to define a set of default logic states at power-up or when connected by way of a USB cable. In many cases this feature is a necessity for ensuring that motorized valves, relay-controlled circuits, etc., do not move unintentionally or enter an undesirable state during a start-up sequence. This allows the U2123A to provide a consistent and predictable start-up process to ensure that no damage occurs to expensive industrial equipment, nor does it compromise the production process due to an unanticipated system error.
To further enhance overall reliability, the Keysight/Agilent U2123A features a complex watchdog timer, which acts as a fail-safe to prevent unplanned shutdowns of the production line. This timer continuously monitors both the status of the USB communications link and the status of the host PC operating system. If either of these items fails (e.g., if there is a crash of the operating system driver or an unexplained loss of communication), the watchdog timer immediately changes all of the output lines to a predetermined, user-defined safe condition. This type of protection is invaluable for protecting valuable industrial equipment and production lines from unexplained system failures.
