Keysight/Agilent 8495A Manual Attenuator
The Keysight 8495A is a hand-controlled, precision RF and microwave step attenuator for controlled signal reduction in dc-to-4-GHz systems. The attenuator provides selectable, 10-dB steps of 0 to 70 dB of reduction, making it well-suited for test systems, signal conditioning, and calibrations in which signal levels have to be varied. The attenuator is made of gold-plated leaf springs for durability over time, capable of more than 5 million cycles in a given portion, repeating to 0.01 dB in normal operation, which is needed for stability in automation or heavily serviced environments. The 0 dB insertion loss is rated as 0.4 dB + 0.07 dB for each GHz, so little signal reduction is made when reduction is not being taken. The maximum of 1.35 for maximum SWR provides impedance stability for all frequencies.
Engineered for power capability, the 8495A accepts a constant, 100 W of RF input power, and 1 W of average, pulsed signals in industrial and lab environments. The interfaces can be SMA female, Type-N female, or an APC-7 interface. For enhanced traceability in measurements, there is an optional UK6 upgrade that provides NIST-approved data for SWR and attenuation, which is critical in supporting stringent cal requirements.
The attenuator’s modular design facilitates intermixing with other Keysight 8494/5/6/7-series attenuators via interconnect kits 11716A/B/C, yielding 1 dB of additional dynamic range in pairs. The amenability is for network analysis, testing a receiver, and spectra monitoring, wherein multi-step fine adjustment of attenuation is required. The device is well-suited for automated test systems, manufacturing tests, and R&D environments, which have a call for repeat, guaranteed operation. The Keysight 8495A is being widely employed in defense, telecommunications, and aeronautics industries for system calibrations, testing for distortion, and signal path optimization. The wide band of frequencies, along with its excellent repetition and configurable connectors, makes it a highly flexible tool for RF signal management in high-performance environments, which is required by engineers.
