Rohde & Schwarz CMD55 Digital Radiocommunication Tester
The Rohde & Schwarz CMD55 is a digital radiocommunication tester designed for the R&D, manufacturing, and service testing of GSM mobile phones. The CMD55 provides a compact unit that simulates a GSM base station to enable the full range of functional and performance tests to be conducted on GSM900, GSM1800, and optionally GSM1900 frequency band devices. It also performs all necessary signaling functions, for example, mobile synchronization, location updates, and call setup for both incoming and outgoing calls, allowing for a fully comprehensive validation of the behavior of a handset.
Measurement capabilities provided by the CMD55 include precision RF measurements such as peak power measurements, handover simulations, etc. In addition to this, when equipped with the optional hardware modules, the CMD55 will provide extensive additional measurement capabilities such as phase and frequency error measurements, power vs. time ramp measurements, bit error rate (BER) measurements, etc. Also, an optional audio frequency measurement module will allow users to perform detailed analyses of the microphone and loudspeaker components using distortion meters and signal generators. As a result, the CMD55 is suitable for use as a flexible tool for both rapid pass/fail testing on the production line and in-depth fault finding during the service and repair phases of a device.
From an operational point of view, the Radiocommunication Tester has been designed to be easy to operate, having a simple-to-use backlit LCD display along with a soft-key menu system. Minimal specialist knowledge is required for the basic operation of the CMD55. Users wishing to automate their testing environments can do so, using either a standard RS-232 interface or one of the optional interfaces, such as the IEC/IEEE bus. Remote control of the CMD55 is possible using SCPI-compatible commands to allow seamless integration into automated test systems. The design of the RF tester has focused on maximizing its measurement accuracy and speed, thereby enabling fast test sequences that are typical of high-throughput production environments while at the same time providing the level of detail required for R&D activities.
