Spirent DLS 400 Wireline Simulator
The Spirent DLS 400 is a programmable two wire cable simulator. It reproduces AC and DC characteristics of twisted copper pairs using discrete R L and C networks. This unit supports balanced twisted pair gauges from 0.32 to 0.9 mm. Its features support for North American 24 AWG and 26 AWG access networks for legacy equipment verification as well. The simulated loop of this DLS 400 wireline simulator operates from direct current to 1.5 MHz with smooth extension to 2 MHz. Its insertion loss accuracy within the specified band is better than 0.5 decibels up to 20 decibels. For higher attenuations from 20 to 70 decibels the tolerance remains within 5% of design. Its wireline path is rated to 300 V DC at 100 mA between tip and ring.
The DLS 400 simulator contains 23 configurable slots for wireline and bypass cards. Its each metric card simulates up to 500 m in 50 m steps as path or bridged tap. The unit’s equivalent cards for American wire gauges simulate up to 1500 ft in 100 ft increments. Two DLS 400E chassis can be cascaded to realize extended ADSL loops for 2.048 mega-bit systems. The integrated impairments card in Spirent DLS 400 provides 8 independent generator sections. Available impairments include flat white noise shaped crosstalk models ADSL compliant NEXT profiles and programmable impulse sources. Its power related metallic noise generation follows ANSI T1.601 requirements using selectable harmonics and adjustable level offsets. Its longitudinal noise stage drives transformer coupled common mode voltages with selectable loads to emulate field interference conditions. All differential and longitudinal impairments are referenced to a 4000 Ohms Thevenin output impedance from 50 Hz. An external noise input accepts 50 Ohms single ended sources with specified level ranges across the operating bandwidth.
The Spirent DLS 400 is controlled through IEEE 488 and RS 232interfaces. Its command set follows the SCPI structure which simplifies automated test integration and regression scripting for qualification plans. The unit’s vendor software runs on Windows hosts and stores complete loop and impairment configurations for fast recall between sessions. The wideband performance and standards noise models matches ADSL HDSL T1 and ISDN technologies. It can combine loop sections and impairments deterministically which enables verification of transceiver robustness and performance margins. Its status reporting includes self-test routines and error registers which support deterministic fault isolation during unattended test execution.
