Keysight/Agilent M8020A J-BERT High-Performance BERTs
The M8020A J-BERT High-Performance BERT (Bit Error Ratio Tester) from Keysight/Agilent is a completely self-contained Bit Error Ratio Tester developed to help engineers engaged in research & development test and characterize receiver compliance in high-speed digital systems. The Keysight M8020A is targeted at chips, devices, boards, and backplanes that have serial I/O ports operating up to 16 Gb/s. When utilizing the optional M8062A Front End Module, the M8020A can be expanded to support 32 Gb/s. The device resides within a five-slot AXIe chassis, allowing for one through four BERT channels to provide for multi-lane testing in consumer electronics, computer interfaces, data center equipment, and communication infrastructure.
At the heart of the Keysight/Agilent M8020A BERT are a pattern generator and error detector that both achieve data rates of 8.5 or 16 Gb/s. Included are integrated and calibrated jitter injection options, including random jitter, periodic jitter, sinusoidal jitter, bounded uncorrelated jitter, spread spectrum clocking with triangular or arbitrary profiles, and common mode or differential mode sinusoidal interference. A built-in 8-tap de-emphasis engine allows for up to 20 dB of positive and negative tap control. Additionally, the BERT has a built-in adjustable ISI generator that emulates channel loss. The M8020A includes built-in clock data recovery with programmable loop bandwidth as well as onboard equalization to allow for repeatable BER measurements even in closed eyes. Available options include interactive link training for PCI Express @ 8 GT/s and 16 GT/s, USB 3.0/3.1, SAS-3, and IEEE backplane standards, including 10GBASE-KR and 25GBASE-KR4.

The M8020A seamlessly integrates with the M8070A Software Platform for the M8000 Series BER Test Solutions, enabling users to run their ARB WG’s and oscilloscopes in combination with the BERT solution. The user benefits from reduced calibration complexity and reduced test time when validating receiver characterization in high-speed digital designs.
