Thorlabs PM320E Optical Power and Energy Meter Console
Designed to be a highly versatile benchtop platform, the Thorlabs PM320E is a dual-channel precision optical power and energy measuring console that may be used to measure optical power in free space or when using fiber optic connectors. This precision measuring device has a number of compatibility options with a variety of optical power sensors (more than 25), such as photodiodes, thermistors and pyroelectrics, which provide power and/or energy readings from 100 pW to 200 W and from 10 µJ to 15 J, respectively. Additionally, the PM320E is capable of measuring wavelengths from 185nm to 25 µm, making it possible to measure many different types of light sources in a variety of spectral ranges (UV to IR).
Due to its programmable dual-channel configuration, the PM320E provides the ability to perform more complex optical analysis in either a laboratory or an industrial setting. The configuration also enables users to monitor two separate channels simultaneously, determine the difference/ratio between the two channels, and perform mathematical operations on the data to enhance data interpretation capabilities. In addition to these capabilities, the PM320E also includes a 240 x 128 pixel graphics display that displays numerical data, bar charts, and/or trend lines graphically for better understanding and clarity of measured values. Users are able to utilize a USB 2.0 connection for controlling the PM320E remotely and to log data into a computer, and in addition, use programmable analog outputs to continuously monitor and record the output signals in real time.
Some common uses for the PM320E power/energy meter include determining the long-term stability of laser powers, determining the sensitivity/responsiveness of photodiodes, and tracking the performance/lifetime of optical components. The dual-channel feature of the console also enables simultaneous reference and test measurements, thereby allowing users to accurately determine attenuation and make radiometric comparisons. Additionally, because the PM320E includes unamplified user supplied detector connections to the BNC input on the front panel, it also provides additional flexibility and versatility by allowing users to integrate their own custom photodiodes. The device is well-suited as a primary tool for managing the optical power in a variety of high-precision measurement applications.
