Keysight/Agilent 1733L Keysight SAN Director Tester
Engineers testing and verifying director-class Fibre Channel switches will need to have a test environment that fully utilizes every port at maximum capability. The Keysight 1733L SAN Director Tester is an automatic qualification system for this purpose. It generates and analyzes simultaneous, full-line-rate (4 Gb/s) data traffic on all 128 ports of the director switch. As such, it has the potential to provide users with real-time data about the performance of their director switch as measured by throughput, latency, and error rates. Moreover, since the 1733L uses a parallel architecture, the user may obtain these metrics concurrently for each connection being tested. Since long-term “soak” tests are required for comprehensive verification of director switch reliability, the 1733L provides a significant advantage over sequential architectures.
Besides providing a framework for measuring performance, the 1733L's graphic user interface also allows users to create complex test scenarios using a drag-and-drop methodology rather than requiring them to write scripts. Furthermore, the 1733L includes the capability to model traffic patterns commonly seen in production storage networks. In doing so, users can validate their director switch's ability to maintain data integrity during normal operation and during periods of reduced bandwidth availability due to faults. Although some testers simply generate frames, the 1733L is able to simulate bursts of activity and other unpredictable patterns often found in large-scale enterprise Storage Area Networks (SANs). Thus, it is capable of simulating multiple levels of traffic intensity, which will verify the robustness of a director switch's forwarding engines as well as its buffer credit management mechanisms.
In order to accelerate qualification times for new versions of director switch software and/or hardware revisions, the 1733L includes a library of pre-written test scripts that automate many common conformance and performance benchmarking activities. These pre-built test sequences greatly simplify manual efforts and thus enable faster “time-to-market.” For example, industrial automation engineers who integrate SANs into Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES) or data-intensive inspection environments benefit from qualifying their director switches prior to deployment using the 1733L. Additionally, because the 1733L is capable of exercising every port of a director switch simultaneously at full wire speed, it will provide a definitive measure of how much total bandwidth is available on a director's backplane as well as whether or not the director's architecture is non-blocking even during heavy utilization. Therefore, it is useful for determining if critical pathways within a director will become congested when operating at peak loads.
