Keysight/Agilent N5323A PCIe Jammer
The Keysight N5323A is an inline error injection instrument developed specifically for the testing of PCI Express protocols. The N5323A is a stand-alone card that can be inserted directly into the PCIe slot of a test system and operates transparently over 2.5 GT/s and 5.0 GT/s to determine how various components (devices) will behave under realistic faulty conditions. Developers are able to utilize the N5323A to identify potential issues of interoperation, validate robustness of error-recovery mechanisms, and expedite identification of root-cause failures without impacting their operating system, driver stack, or end-user applications.
The N5323A uses a Windows PC running over USB to control the card through a graphical sequencer to create multiple possible fault scenarios. Pre-built QuickTest scripts enable teams to quickly get started, and a built-in protocol analyzer displays any errors or anomalies detected during test execution. The statistics table and graph also detail when each error was introduced into the system. External trigger ports allow synchronization with other Keysight instruments or additional equipment. In addition to support for spread spectrum clocking, the N5323A has 128 KB of onboard memory for storing event sequences related to critical events.
The jamming capability of the Keysight N5323A covers all three lower levels of the PCIe specification. For example, at the physical layer, it can introduce disparity errors, drop start/end framing characters, and force link retraining/recovery. The Data Link Layer provides similar capabilities such as corrupting CRC values, sending deliberate NAKs to transaction layer packets, dropping/inserting DLLPs, and adjusting sequence number offsets. At the transaction layer, it can manipulate TLP's by delaying/dropping them, modify header fields, and replace payload field contents. Furthermore, conditional triggering based upon specific packet-type(s) and lane-state(s) enables accurate replication of intermittent faults.
Engineers who utilize the Keysight N5323A target all types of errors (correctable/uncorrectable/non-fatal/fatal) in any type of PCIe 2.0 device. It provides programmable de-emphasis and adjustable unit interval simulation of marginally acceptable channel characteristics. Moreover, the user can adjust skew, lane polarity, and lane order to create the most representative test environment possible. Typical application areas for the Keysight N5323A include servers, storage controllers, graphics cards, and embedded systems. Although considered obsolete, the Keysight N5323A represents the early days of inline fault injection, demonstrating how developers have used these tools to expose weaknesses in their products that cannot be detected using software-based simulators alone.
