Keysight/Agilent U4421A MIPI D-PHY Protocol Analyzer/Exerciser
The U4421A contains both a fully functioning exerciser and a protocol analyzer in a single AXIe module for MIPI D-PHY CSI-2 & DSI interfaces. It helps solve the problems of high-speed multi-lane burst images, HS/LP transition signals, and short multi-bus product cycle times. When using multiple instruments or mainframes, it is also possible to have time correlation between Peripheral Component Interconnect Express (PCI-E), DDR, and High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) on multiple buses, providing a comprehensive and synchronized view of all buses within a mobile system. In addition to being able to act as either a traffic generator or a capture tool, it allows closed-loop verification. External control can be done from another PC or via the M9536A AXIe embedded controller.
There are three probe types available for use with the U4421A. They include the E5381A differential flying leads, which attach directly to vias and headers; the E5404A Soft Touch Pro, which has a low-profile PCB connector attachment and an SMA-to-Soft-Touch breakout board (co-developed with UNH-IOL) for attaching to reference termination boards or as a mid-bus adapter. As a raw mode analyzer, the U4421A can capture up to four data lanes along with a single clock lane at speeds of up to 1.5 Gb/s. Trace depth is user-expandable to 16 GB. In raw mode, each 8b/10b packet of information is shown with 5 ns timing resolution in a time-correlated waveform view, allowing users to see the physical-layer source of problems causing their protocol decode failures.
In addition to raw mode, the U4421A has protocol-aware triggering capabilities that allow users to create their own drag-and-drop macros or if-then-else sequences that branch off in eight directions. These can isolate packets based on Type, Errors, or Payload. The Overview tab can count traffic and errors over any interval and step through each occurrence. The peel-off tabs break down the packet into header, payload, and individual lanes. There is also integrated image extraction capability that reconstructs CSI-2 and DSI frames for camera and display debugging. The U4421A performs mobile device validation, embedded system testing, MIPI silicon/IP validation, and camera module validation all while providing synchronized multi-bus analysis/stimulation from a single instrument. By combining these functions into one instrument, the U4421A greatly accelerates CSI-2 & DSI interface debugging in smartphones, automotive cameras, wearables, etc.
