Keysight/Agilent U4998U HDMI and MHL Protocol/Audio/Video Analyzer and Generator Upgrades
The Keysight U4998U upgrade package adds passive monitoring capability (PSV) as well as MHL compliance tests to the U4998A HDMI/MHL protocol analyzer and generator. For engineers developing and testing multimedia interfaces, this package provides a set of license-activated options to enable passive monitoring and MHL compliance testing using the base instrument.
Through its PSV option, the U4998U will allow for simultaneous viewing of a source's output and/or monitoring the HDMI signals while either snooping on or recording those signals. Using this non-invasive tapping technique will preserve the original electrical connection between devices, which can be important when trying to troubleshoot handshake issues, EDID exchanges, HDCP authentication, and streaming of audio and/or video from a source to a sink. Additionally, it may prove useful in troubleshooting interoperability issues within complex HDMI distribution networks used in industrial human-machine interfaces, digital signage, and conference rooms.
For MHL interfaces, the U4998U allows automatic validation of compliance with the MHL specification by providing two additional options (801 and 601). Option 801 will activate the source test suite, ensuring the source device complies with all MHL timing, packet construction, and content protection requirements. Option 601 will activate the Sink Test Suite, ensuring that any sink device (display/receiver) properly negotiates the link and accepts valid video formats and auxiliary data from an MHL source device. Together, Options 801 & 601 transform the U4998A Analyzer/Generator into an MHL Compliance Validator for MHL-enabled smartphones, tablets, automotive displays, home theater components, etc.
Together, these passive HDMI monitoring capabilities, combined with systematic MHL source and sink verification, provide a comprehensive analysis and emulation solution for pre-certification and production line testing. Engineers responsible for embedded vision systems, operator panels, and media interfaces depend on such tools to guarantee that their products deliver optimal audio/video performance at every phase of their product lifecycle. Since no hardware modifications are required to install these upgrades in the field, they offer a cost-effective way to expand your test capabilities.
