Keysight M9408A RF Reflectometer
The Keysight M9408A is a modular PXIe instrument that provides additional measurement port capabilities of a vector network analyzer (VNA) over long distances and thereby minimizes the loss and phase instability associated with using long coaxial cables. As such, in the industrial automation environment, where Device Under Test (DUT) locations are typically fixed on a production floor or inside a large environmental chamber, the M9408A reflectometer allows for the placement of the calibrated reference plane at the DUT location. Therefore, two-port characterization can be performed accurately without having to move the VNA.
This reflectometer has a native frequency span of 10 MHz to 50 GHz, with the option to extend the lower end of its frequency span to 300 kHz for low-frequency measurements. Its system impedance is 50 ohms, and it utilizes precision 2.4 mm connectors that are designed for millimeter-wave interconnect applications. Due to the fact that it occupies a single PXIe slot, it will fit compactly into a chassis with other modular instruments, which will save rack space in automated test systems.
Inside the M9408A Reflectometer, there is a directional bridge that separates forward traveling waves and reverse traveling waves and delivers raw signal ratios to the analyzer that are needed to calculate S-parameters. Since the M9408A is placed near the measurement point, the test signal does not suffer the attenuation of long cables, thus allowing more power to be delivered to the DUT. Additionally, by placing the M9408A near the measurement port(s), it will allow for more dynamic range during measurements since the measurement ports can be hundreds of feet away from the host VNA. Common applications include factory-wide RF monitoring, phased-array antenna calibration, and semiconductor wafer probing.
The design of the M9408A simplifies system-level calibration since the dominant cable effects have been moved behind the reflectometer's reference plane. Industrial engineers use this method to minimize the amount of time spent on periodic recalibrations of their measurement equipment and also to ensure consistent measurement fidelity across shifts. Finally, by embedding the M9408A into a PXIe chassis, the entire test setup becomes more adaptable. Users can reconfigure stimulus and response paths as product requirements change over time.
