Keysight/Agilent M9181A PXI Digital Multimeter
Keysight's M9181A is a 6.5-digit PXI Digital Multimeter (DMM) module that was developed to provide economical solutions for automated test systems (ATS). This DMM provides all the necessary precision measurements in a single-slot, compact form factor as part of a PXI chassis along with many other instruments. As the entry-level model in Keysight’s M918x Series, this product focuses on providing all of the most commonly used DMM functions at an affordable price without including advanced features. Keysight’s use of the PXI platform provides high throughput combined with space-efficient design, and a large variety of compatible switching, multiplexing, and signal generation modules can be added to increase test capabilities.
The M9181A measures DC voltage, AC voltage, DC current, AC current, and both 2-wire and 4-wire resistance. The DC voltage accuracy is 40 parts per million (ppm) per year and has measurement ranges from 200 mV to 200 V. The AC voltage bandwidth is extended to 100 kHz. Resistance measurement ranges are from 200 ohms to 20 megohms with appropriate test currents applied per range. The current measurement ranges are from 2 milliamps to 2 amps with low burden voltage. Additionally, the M9181A supports synchronized acquisition through external triggering via a DIN connector and PXI backplane trigger lines with edge sensitivity selectable. Data can also be buffered for up to 80 reads in addition to multi-sample mode, which allows fast burst measurements in DCV and DCI functions.
Users find that they are able to rapidly integrate the M9181A using provided IVI-compliant Windows drivers, where users can access an easy-to-use software interface called the "soft front panel," which facilitates interactive operation and debugging. Code samples for developing applications in LabView, C/C++, C#, Visual Basic, and MATLAB are also provided to further reduce development time. Rugged construction makes this product suitable for harsh industrial environments. Calibration by Keysight using NIST-traceable methods guarantees users' confidence in their ability to measure and report results accurately. Common applications include testing electronic control units for automobiles, testing components for semiconductors, verifying medical devices, and checking subsystems for aircraft. By integrating all the different measurement functions into one PXI card, the amount of physical space required by the system will be reduced along with the overall costs of performing these tests while still allowing for the throughput necessary to characterize products during design and production.
