Keysight/Agilent M9406A PXIe Optical USB 2.0 Extender
The Keysight M9406A, formerly from Agilent, is a PXIe-based Optical Extender designed to transport USB 2.0 communications via fiber-optic cabling for remote operation of USB peripherals in Distributed Test & Measurement Environments. With its compact size of 2 slots (3U), it operates as a Complete Optical/USB 2.0 Hub. It complements the M9403A & M9404A Optical RF Extendors by providing additional USB Ports at a Remote Location where the Device Under Test resides, thereby eliminating the need for Local Computers near the DUT while allowing for full-speed interaction with Peripherals.
As a result of utilizing Single Mode Fiber and E2000 APC Connectors, the M9406A has a wavelength of 1550 nm and an optical output power of +5 dBm. For bidirectional communication, the M9406A utilizes a dual-fiber cable. This results in signal integrity at extended distances. The M9406A will deliver standard USB 2.0 ports that support a wide variety of peripherals, such as keyboards, mice, video adapters for remote monitors, power sensors, electronic calibration modules, etc. The extension of USB 2.0 over fiber optic cables provides galvanic isolation and immunity to electromagnetic interference, both critical factors in sensitive RF/microwave testing scenarios.
Remote Instrument Control and Calibration in Industrial Automation and Test System Applications utilize the Keysight/Agilent M9406A to simplify tasks. With the use of a remote USB power sensor, engineers can take measurements on the remote device or run calibration routines on an E-Cal unit attached to a Vector Network Analyzer without needing to physically attend to the far end. Using a single optical link to connect a monitor and keyboard simplifies the configuration process for many large-scale production tests, antenna ranges, or satellite payload testing applications. The modular design of the M9406A in PXIe format enables users to integrate seamlessly into chassis-based systems, thus allowing commonality with other modular instruments. Decoupling the USB interface from the controller location allows facilities to position their measurement equipment closer to the signal source while still collecting data and commands centrally, thereby minimizing cable losses and increasing the overall accuracy of their tests.
