National Instruments 778679-01 PXI Slot Filler
National Instruments' 778679-01 is a PXI Filler Panel Kit designed to fill empty PXI chassis bays and maintain the structural and thermal integrity of the overall design of modular testing and measurement applications. The 778679-01 includes one each of three double-slot panels and three single-slot panels. This arrangement provides designers the ability to fit a variety of different-sized openings into a PXI chassis, whereas traditional filler panels are available in either single- or double-slot sizes and are limited by their size. Each of the six panels uses captive-screw fasteners located at both ends of each panel. These fasteners enable designers to quickly attach (or remove) a panel utilizing a standard screwdriver and eliminate potential misplacement issues when performing maintenance. Designers who build Automated Test Equipment (ATE) utilize similar types of products as this part to ensure their ATE designs remain uncluttered, well-organized, and easily expandable for future additions of new modules without exposing the internal circuitry.
Although primarily used for covering open slots, the 778679-01 has an additional critical role in maintaining airflow throughout PXI-based systems. When slots are left uncovered in a chassis, it creates a disruption in the airflow path that was originally designed for flow through a chassis fan assembly. As a result, the airflow is distributed unevenly around installed modules. The PXI Slot Filler maintains consistent airflow paths through sealed slots, thus maintaining consistent temperatures for all installed modules. The importance of this airflow maintenance cannot be overstated, especially when designing high-density rack-mounted installations, data acquisition systems, and/or semiconductor/avionics test benches that have multiple chassis operating continuously under varying temperature conditions.
In addition to helping maintain airflow, the 778679-01 assists in maintaining cleanliness of the overall system and helps to prevent exposure to contaminants such as dust, oil, etc., that could enter the system via open slots. Once entered into a system, contaminants such as these can eventually settle on connectors or other active circuitry and cause electrical faults. In laboratory settings and training environments for operators, the PXI Slot Filler protects personnel from being exposed to energized connector pins on a chassis. Since the installer will always switch off the chassis power before installing a 778679-01 panel, this product also promotes safe handling practices in addition to protecting unused PXI slots from external environmental and physical damage.
