The National Instruments 783610-01 (NI-9231) is an 8-channel, 24-bit C Series sound and vibration input module designed for dynamic signal acquisition, acoustic analysis, and condition monitoring in CompactDAQ and CompactRIO systems. Featuring simultaneous sampling across all eight channels via front-panel 10-32 coaxial connectors, the module provides a software-selectable AC/DC coupling interface with a ±5 V peak nominal input voltage range (±5.1 V peak typical) and a fine scaling coefficient of 610,715 pV/LSB. Signal conditioning includes software-selectable Integrated Electronics Piezo-Electric (IEPE) signal excitation delivering 2 mA (2.09 mA typical) with low noise (75 nA RMS at 51.2 kS/s) and a compliance voltage up to 19 V, complete with automated open-loop (<2 mA) and short-circuit (<1.2 V AI+ to ground) sensor fault diagnostics.
Timing and conversion are managed by an onboard 13.1072 MHz master timebase (±100 ppm accuracy), driving simultaneous Delta-Sigma Analog-to-Digital Converters (ADCs). When using the internal master timebase, per-channel sample rates range from 267 S/s/ch to 51.2 kS/s/ch; when locked to an external master timebase, the acquisition range spans 244.141 S/s/ch to 51.367 kS/s/ch. Dynamic performance is optimized by a high-pass filter cutoff frequency (-3 dB at 1.2 Hz, -0.1 dB at 7.9 Hz) and asymmetric input impedance designed for single-ended piezoresistive and IEPE sensors (918 kΩ in parallel with 135 pF from AI+ to chassis; 50 Ω from AI- to chassis).
Engineered for rugged field conditions, the enclosed IP40-rated module operates reliably across extended industrial temperature ranges and high-altitude deployments up to 5,000 meters (Pollution Degree 2). The chassis-ground-referenced channel architecture provides robust shielding against electro-magnetic interference (EMI) and structural noise, delivering high-fidelity acoustic and vibration monitoring in automated testing environments.
