National Instruments 780177-01 CompactRIO Controller and Chassis System
The National Instruments 780177-01 is a cRIO-9074 CompactRIO controller and eight-slot chassis designed for industrial control, monitoring, and data acquisition applications. Its compact, fanless design combines a 400 MHz real-time processor with a 2 million-gate Xilinx Spartan-3 FPGA in a single enclosure. The system includes 128 MB of DRAM and 256 MB of nonvolatile memory for application storage and data logging. It also provides two 10/100BASE-TX Ethernet ports for network communication and expansion, along with an RS-232 DB-9 port for connecting serial devices. A conformal coating provides additional protection against dust, moisture, and other environmental contaminants.
The 780177-01 operates from a 19 to 30 VDC power supply and has an operating temperature range of -20°C to +55°C. Its eight C Series module slots support a wide range of I/O options, including analog and digital I/O, thermocouple, RTD, and accelerometer modules. The onboard FPGA provides fast, deterministic control and allows users to implement custom I/O timing and processing. The real-time processor allows applications to run independently without requiring a dedicated PC or workstation.
The two Ethernet interfaces provide additional system flexibility. One port can be connected to a workstation or enterprise network, while the other can be used to connect additional Ethernet-enabled equipment or expand the control system. This makes the 780177-01 suitable for distributed automation and monitoring applications where multiple devices need to communicate over a network.
The CompactRIO platform is well suited for OEM equipment, industrial automation, embedded control, data acquisition, motion control, and equipment condition monitoring. The combination of real-time processing, FPGA-based control, flexible C Series I/O, and network connectivity provides a compact platform for developing custom control and measurement systems. Integration with LabVIEW Real-Time and LabVIEW FPGA also allows engineers to develop and deploy custom control algorithms, data acquisition routines, and high-speed I/O operations directly on the controller.
