National Instruments 776113-01 ISA Interface Board
The National Instruments 776113-01 (Model Name: GPIB-PCIIA) is an older ISA bus interface card designed to provide direct IEEE 488 communications between a PC and programmable instrumentation. The board was based upon a custom ASIC called the NAT4882. The NAT4882 provided all of the necessary hardware registers to emulate either the NEC µPD7210 or the Texas Instrument TMS9914A controllers while providing complete IEEE 488.2 talker, listener and controller functions. DIP switches allow the user to select GPIB-PCII or GPIB-PCIIA operation as well as define the base I/O address of the board so there are no resource conflicts within densely populated industrial PCs. A shielded 24-pin connector also protects against noise in high-noise environments typical of many automation settings.
Each 776113-01 unit includes the NI-488.2 driver software for use under Windows 3.1 and DOS. This driver software presents GPIB commands at a high level as a standard application programming interface (API), allowing for rapid development of applications. The NAT4882 ASIC used in the GPIB-PCIIA accelerates the transfer rate of data to greater than 300 Kbytes/second through execution of all bus protocol handshake signals, timeout conditions and parallel polling functions in hardware as opposed to utilising CPU resources on the host PC. The six available interrupt lines and three DMA channels may be jumpered as required to balance PC loadings. Additionally, software-transparent interrupt sharing in GPIB-PCIIA mode facilitates coexistence with other boards that have been installed in the same PC chassis.
In terms of backwards compatibility, the 776113-01 combines driver and silicon components that make it compatible with all previous GPIB-PCII and GPIB-PCIIA boards produced by National Instruments. As such, investment made in prior testing programmes will be preserved.
Engineers involved in industrial automation use the ISA Interface Board to ensure continued long-life automated test equipment, factory-floor data acquisition systems and semiconductor characterization stations currently utilizing ISA backplane architecture and DOS-based control sequences continue to operate efficiently. The board will integrate seamlessly with LabVIEW and LabWindows/CVI version software available during that era thus allowing seamless control of legacy oscilloscopes, digital multi-meters, power supplies and waveform generators without having to rewrite existing test procedures. With its ability to connect modern laptop computers running modern operating systems with vintage IEEE 488 systems, the 776113-01 continues to be a valuable resource for extending the life cycle of mission-critical instrumentation where upgrading the entire platform would be too expensive or technologically prohibitive.
