National Instruments 778416-01 GPIB Controller
The 778416-01 is a GPIB-USB-B controller. It is capable of converting a computer's USB port into an entire IEEE 488.2 instrument controller. This adapter was designed to provide engineers with a means of connecting their GPIB instrumentation via USB ports on their computers. As such, they do not have to commit a precious internal slot within their computer to an additional GPIB controller. The 778416-01 can communicate with up to 14 GPIB programmable instruments simultaneously. The small size and weight of this GPIB Controller make it suitable for use in laptop-based test stations (laptop-based test systems), as well as field calibration applications and portable measurement systems where a full-sized desktop GPIB card would be impractical. The 778416-01 supports the following operating systems: Windows 2000, XP, Me, and 98, as well as several Linux platforms. Upon installing the hardware component and initializing the interface (via plug-and-play), there are no user-configurable switches, nor will you be required to restart your computer.
The functional core of the 778416-01 controller consists of a TNT-family talker/listener/controller ASIC, which provides all necessary functions required to operate as a complete IEEE 488.2 controller. Standard and extended talker/listener modes, serial and parallel polling, service request management, and pass/receive control are just a few examples of the many operational modes available when using the controller. Using standard IEEE 488 handshaking methods, data transfer over the GPIB bus occurs at speeds of up to 880 KB/sec. Transfer of data to/from the host computer occurs at full speed (12 MB/sec) utilizing the USB B-series connector. Since the unit is powered via the USB bus, the 778416-01 unit does not require an external power source or any additional power supplies.
Because the NI 778416-01 controller is bus powered, it requires a maximum of 200 milliamps of DC current from the USB connection itself, eliminating the need for an external power adapter or separate power source. The dimensions of this controller are 10.7 x 6.6 x 2.6 centimeters. The device includes a standard IEEE 488 GPIB port having 24 pins along with a standard series A type USB connector, allowing users to connect instruments directly to the controller without additional cables. When used with the NI-488.2 driver package, the user will gain access to utility programs such as configuration wizards and diagnostic tools."
