National Instruments 779959-01 Multifunction I/O Device
The National Instruments 779959-01, also known as the NI USB-6255, is a 16-bit multifunction data acquisition (DAQ) device that provides both analog and digital I/O for PC-based measurement and control applications. The unit is housed in a rugged, shielded enclosure with front-panel screw-terminal connections, allowing sensors and other field devices to be connected directly to the DAQ hardware. It is suitable for both benchtop and industrial test environments.
The 779959-01 supports up to 80 single-ended or 40 differential analog input channels with 16-bit resolution and an absolute accuracy of ±1,920 µV. The analog input system has an aggregate sampling rate of up to 1.25 MS/s and includes an onboard FIFO buffer for temporary data storage during acquisition. The device uses multiplexed analog inputs rather than simultaneous sampling, making it well suited to applications where multiple channels need to be monitored from a single DAQ system.
In addition to its analog inputs, the 779959-01 provides two analog output channels with update rates of up to 2.86 MS/s. It also includes 24 bidirectional digital I/O lines and two 32-bit counters/timers that can be used for timing, pulse generation, event counting, and related measurement tasks. Together, these functions allow the unit to handle a variety of measurement, automation, and test requirements without requiring separate hardware for each function.
The 779959-01 is designed for applications such as high-channel-count sensor measurement, design verification, manufacturing test, laboratory automation, and research. Its multiple analog inputs make it suitable for monitoring sensors such as thermocouples, strain gauges, and pressure transducers. The system can also be combined with SCC or SCXI signal-conditioning hardware for applications requiring additional signal conditioning or specialized sensor interfaces, including high-voltage measurements.
The device connects to a host computer through USB 2.0 and is supported by NI-DAQmx software for hardware configuration and application development. NI-DAQmx provides programming support for developing custom measurement and control applications and integrates with National Instruments software and supported programming environments. The 779959-01 can therefore serve as a centralized I/O platform for automated test, data logging, measurement, and control systems.
