National Instruments 778991-02 Digital Waveform Device
The National Instruments 778991-02 (PCI-6561) is a 16-channel digital waveform generator/analyzer designed for the PCI bus. It can generate and acquire high-speed digital signal patterns at frequencies up to 100 MHz, making it suitable for semiconductor validation, digital protocol testing, and mixed-signal system development.
The 16 data channels provide flexible control for stimulus and response testing. In single data rate (SDR) mode, each channel can be configured individually for input or output. In double data rate (DDR) mode, the channels are divided into two groups, with channels 0 through 7 used for signal generation and channels 8 through 15 used for signal acquisition. This arrangement allows the 778991-02 to generate stimulus and capture responses at the same time, making it useful for real-time testing of devices under test.
The 778991-02 includes 16 Mbit of onboard memory per channel, providing storage for long digital waveform sequences. The board uses National Instruments' Synchronization and Memory Core (SMC) architecture to manage waveform memory and timing. Waveforms can be controlled based on sample count or onboard scripting instructions, giving users flexibility when creating and executing complex digital patterns.
Timing can be configured through three clock inputs and three clock outputs. These clock connections can interface with the onboard voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO), an external CLK IN source, or a strobe signal. The supported clock frequency range extends from 48 Hz to 100 MHz, with timing resolution down to 10 ps.
For external signal interfacing and synchronization, the board provides four programmable function interface (PFI) lines along with support for several digital voltage standards, including LVDS, LVPECL, and software-selectable LVCMOS or LVDS on supported pins. Connections are made through SMB connectors and an InfiniBand-style I/O connector.
The 778991-02 is supported by National Instruments software and development environments including LabVIEW, LabWindows/CVI, Measurement Studio, and .NET through the NI-HSDIO driver. Configuration and hardware setup can be performed through Measurement & Automation Explorer (MAX). With its combination of high-speed digital I/O, onboard waveform memory, flexible clocking, and multiple voltage standards, the 778991-02 is well suited for automated test benches, semiconductor development, and laboratory applications where precise digital signal generation and acquisition are required.
