National Instruments 783699-03 TRC-8542 CAN HS/FD Transceiver Cable

The National Instruments 783699-03 (TRC-8542) is a hardware-selectable transceiver cable engineered to connect NI-XNET host devices—such as the NI-9860 C Series module—directly to High-Speed CAN (CAN HS) and Flexible Data-Rate CAN (CAN FD) networks. Powered directly through the host device interface without requiring an external supply, it simplifies cabling in automated test environments and field applications. The cable draws a typical power consumption of 440 mW (550 mW maximum active power dissipation) and drives CAN_H and CAN_L signal lines with an output voltage limit capped at 5 VDC.

Built for robust electrical protection, the transceiver lines handle continuous input voltages ranging from -27 VDC to +40 VDC relative to COM. The cable architecture incorporates galvanic isolation, providing 60 VDC continuous port-to-earth ground isolation and keeping COM signals isolated from the host controller ground (Measurement Category I rated; not for connection to MAINS or Measurement Categories II, III, or IV). Field connectivity is provided via a standard 9-pin female DE-SUB connector with jackscrews rated for a maximum torque of 0.56 N·m (5.0 lb·in) to ensure a secure connection under heavy vibration.

Housed in a durable IP40-rated assembly measuring 447 mm to 462 mm (17.6 in to 18.2 in) in length and weighing 70 g (2.5 oz), the TRC-8542 is rated for harsh automotive and industrial environments (Pollution Degree 2). It operates across a temperature range of -40 °C to 70 °C (-40 °C to 85 °C storage) and non-condensing relative humidity from 10% to 90% at altitudes up to 5,000 meters. Mechanical durability is validated to withstand 5 g RMS random and 5 g sinusoidal vibration (10 Hz to 500 Hz), alongside operating shock up to 30 g (11 ms half-sine pulse) and 50 g (3 ms half-sine pulse across 18 shocks).
