The National Instruments 785578-11 (NI ELVIS III) is an integrated engineering education and rapid prototyping platform designed for hands-on control, signal processing, and instrumentation laboratories. Driven by a Xilinx Zynq-7000 (Z-7020) All Programmable SoC featuring a dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 processor running at 667 MHz alongside user-programmable FPGA logic, the platform provides deterministic hardware-in-the-loop performance and real-time computation. Operating under 32-bit NI Linux Real-Time, the system architecture includes 1 GB of nonvolatile flash storage for application code and data logging, paired with 512 MB of volatile DDR3 SDRAM operating on a 16-bit wide memory bus at a 533 MHz clock frequency.
For local and remote connectivity, the 785578-11 features a comprehensive suite of wired and wireless communications interfaces. Physical USB connectivity includes a USB 2.0 Hi-Speed host port (Type-A connector supplying up to 900 mA of VBUS power for external peripherals) and a USB 2.0 Hi-Speed device port (Type-C connector) for direct host-PC interfacing. Network integration is handled via a gigabit Ethernet interface compliant with IEEE 802.3 standards (10Base-T, 100Base-TX, and 1000Base-T) supporting auto-negotiation and unshielded twisted-pair cable distances up to 100 meters.
Wireless networking capabilities are provided by an onboard dual-band Wi-Fi radio compliant with IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n standards. Supporting both 2.4 GHz (channels 1–13, 20 MHz bandwidth, 3.0 dBi maximum antenna gain) and 5 GHz (channels 36–165, 20/40 MHz bandwidth, 4.0 dBi maximum antenna gain) frequency bands via a single integrated antenna, the wireless interface can operate in Client Mode or Access Point Mode. Enterprise-grade security protocols include WPA, WPA2, and WPA2-Enterprise encryption in client mode, as well as WPA2-Personal security in access point mode, allowing students and researchers to securely stream measurement data and remotely interact with experimental breadboards across campus networks.
