National Instruments 778041-01 ISA GPIB Instrument Control Device
The 778041-02 (model number PC/104-GPIB) interface module is designed to be an embedded and/or industrial automation component in applications where IEEE 488 connectivity is needed. It contains all necessary components to perform both the talker/listener/controller functions required by IEEE 488.2 specifications and provides direct communication to third-party GPIB devices in test and measurement applications. In addition, because the 778041-02 can be used as a "plug-and-play" module, it can fit directly into PC/104 stacks used in many ruggedized/space-limited/embedded computing platforms and is suitable for use in manufacturing, defense, and process control applications. The 778041-02 enables reliable GPIB data transfer between a host computer and GPIB-based instrumentation while using less than half the space taken up by traditional expansion hardware.
This 778041-01 GPIB controller emulates the same software and register structures found in the AT-GPIB/TNT. This allows developers to run their current GPIB applications on an embedded platform without modifying any source code. The internal FIFO buffers isolate all GPIB communications from ISA bus communications. Additionally, the 16-bit ISA bus interface will pack bytes into words for high-speed throughput. When running at the standard interlocked handshake, bus transfer speeds of over 1.5 MB/s are possible. However, when utilizing HS488 non-interlocked mode, speeds greater than 1.6 MB/s are attainable. Since overall bus transfer speed depends upon both the system configuration and the type(s) of instrumentation being communicated with via GPIB, the maximum bus transfer speeds may vary depending on those factors. Users also have jumper-selectable options to utilize one of eleven available interrupt lines and/or three 16-bit DMA channels for added flexibility during integration into embedded architectures. In addition, the user has the option to operate in 8-bit stack mode if DMA is disabled.
Another important feature of this product is its low power consumption from the PC/104 connector, as it typically consumes 50 mA and no more than 100 mA of current at 5 VDC. As such, it would be suitable for use within low-power embedded designs. The included NI-488.2 driver, along with the NI-488DDK for developing custom operating system drivers, supports several different platforms, including Windows, DOS, and others. Support for LabVIEW, LabWindows/CVI, and Measurement Studio makes the 778041-02 a viable option for embedding GPIB functionality into automated test benches and instrument control applications.
