National Instruments 778041-01 ISA GPIB Instrument Control Device
National Instruments 778041-01 (model number PC-104-GPIB) is a fully compliant IEEE 488.2 plug-and-play interface controller designed specifically for use on the industrial bus of the PC/104. This interface utilizes the TNT4882C Application-Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC), which performs all of the essential Talker, Listener, and Controller functions, allowing for deterministic communications with as many as fourteen GPIB devices in applications requiring automated measurements and controls. The interface allows for maximum transfer rates of up to 1.5 megabytes per second using interlocked handshakes and up to 1.6 megabytes per second using the HS488 High-Speed Protocol. Therefore, it ensures that the acquisition process occurs with minimal latency and does not result in bus saturation. Also included with the purchase of the hardware is a full license for the NI-488.2 driver, ensuring that the user has easy access to seamless integration with other manufacturers' equipment within the most demanding manufacturing environments.
Due to its compliance with the legacy AT-GPIB/TNT, the National Instruments 778041-01 will provide a simple upgrade path for systems that have previously utilized this type of equipment. In addition, the proven programming interfaces available from this legacy equipment are also retained by the GPIB Instrument Control Device. Since the 778041-01 utilizes a 16-bit ISA interface, it incorporates FIFO buffers that create a separation transaction processing and system bus activity. These FIFO buffers prevent data overrun conditions from occurring during GPIB transaction processing. It also includes an automatic byte-to-word packing function, which is used to maximize the amount of data that can be transferred across the GPIB during each transaction. As a result of its ability to be jumper-selected to allow selection from eleven different interrupt lines and three 16-bit DMA channels, the system integrator can customize the board to meet his/her requirements. If DMA is disabled, then the board will default to 8-bit stack operation.
In terms of power consumption, the National Instruments 778041-01 requires approximately 50 milliamps of current at 5 volts DC. Due to this low power requirement, the product is suitable for embedded automation rack applications as well as portable test station configurations. Support for industrial automation development is provided through Windows 2000/NT/XP/Me/9x/3.1, DOS, and custom real-time operating systems using the NI-488DDK. Integration into lab-based test environments is supported through LabVIEW, LabWindows/CVI, and Measurement Studio for accelerated test sequence generation.
