The National Instruments 785679-01 (PXIe-8301) is a high-performance remote control module engineered to establish high-speed PCI Express control of a 3U PXI Express chassis directly from a host laptop, desktop, or all-in-one PC equipped with a Thunderbolt™ 3 port. Utilizing Intel Thunderbolt 3 technology over passive or active copper cables, the single-slot module provides a x4 PCI Express Gen 3 link delivering up to 2.3 GB/s of sustained MXI data bandwidth across its two front-panel USB Type-C / Thunderbolt 3 ports. Because the underlying PCI Express architecture remains completely transparent to host operating systems and software drivers, connected PXI Express instruments and peripheral modules are recognized as native PCIe devices without requiring additional software setup or specialized driver layers.
Mechanically designed as a 1-slot 3U PXI Express system controller module, the PXIe-8301 measures 10.7 cm × 17.5 cm (4.2 in. × 6.9 in.) and weighs approximately 0.16 kg (0.35 lb). Operating power is supplied directly through the chassis backplane across four rails, consuming 480 mA typical (600 mA maximum) at +3.3 V, 420 mA typical (500 mA maximum) at +5 V, 850 mA typical (4.2 A maximum) at +12 V, and 160 mA typical (200 mA maximum) on the +5 V auxiliary standby line.
Built for dependable operation in benchtop and industrial measurement environments, the module supports indoor operation up to an altitude of 2,000 meters (Pollution Degree 2). Operating ambient temperature limits are governed by cable selection: 0 °C to 55 °C when using passive copper Thunderbolt 3 cables, and 10 °C to 35 °C when utilizing active copper cables, both under 10% to 90% non-condensing relative humidity conditions. Designed to meet rugged MIL-PRF-28800F Class 3 environmental specifications, the unit tolerates storage temperatures from -40 °C to 71 °C (5% to 95% non-condensing humidity) and features an operational shock resistance rated to a 30 g peak half-sine pulse of 11 ms duration.
