National Instruments 778636-03 Universal AC PXI Chassis
The National Instruments 778636-03 is a PXI-1042 8-slot chassis designed specifically for the thermal management and power requirements of today's PXI-based test and measurement equipment. It uses a standard 3U backplane, which accepts both PXI modules and PICMG 2.0 compliant CompactPCI (CPCI) modules as part of its design philosophy. This gives automation engineers the ability to add instrumentation to their test and measurement platform in whatever configuration best fits their needs. The 778636-03 combines a high-output power supply with a mechanical structure that has been optimized for practical everyday use in offices, laboratories, and schools, where quiet operation is typically required. Compliance with PXI Specification Revision 2.0 provides a mechanism to ensure consistent timing and synchronization among all modules installed in the chassis.
The universal AC input stage is capable of automatically adjusting voltage and frequency to accommodate input voltages from 100 to 240 volts AC, using an input operating window of 90 to 264 volts AC, and frequency from 50 to 60 Hz, using an operating frequency range of 47 to 63 Hz. The chassis also features a 10-amp push-reset circuit breaker rated at 8 amps input current. This feature eliminates the need to replace fuses. In addition, a modular power supply shuttle can be easily removed to facilitate maintenance and servicing, reducing mean time to repair. The chassis also offers remote voltage monitoring and inhibit capabilities via a rear panel connector, which enables integration of the chassis into other monitored test systems.
The chassis functions with a temperature-sensing module that dynamically controls fan operation based upon intake air temperatures, thereby minimizing audible noise levels during operation. An LED indicator light on the front panel will illuminate if there is a failure in the power supply. Additionally, a front panel standby power switch is provided for easy access when desired. A built-in carry handle enables transport of the unit to remote locations, and the tilting feet provide stability when placed on a workbench or other surface.
