National Instruments 778824-00 Celeron-based Embedded Controller for PXI
The NI 778824-00 ((Model PXI-8184) is a fully integrated PXI and CompactPCI embedded controller that has been developed specifically to be used in PXI, CompactPCI, and other types of high-performance measurement and automation systems. As it features an 850 MHz Intel Celeron processor with 128 KBytes of L2 on-chip cache, the 778824-00 integrates all the main components of a full-fledged PC into a single compact unit mounted in a PXI chassis slot. With its robust design, the part can operate in harsh environments due to extreme temperatures or heavy vibrations that may affect normal desktop-type PCs. In addition, because it contains the processing power directly in the PXI backplane, no cables are needed to connect to the rest of the system. This leaves additional available slots in the chassis for adding your own data acquisition and instrumentation cards, thus providing engineers designing modular test systems with even greater flexibility than before.
There are several configuration options available when purchasing the 778824-00. A total of 128MB of memory is provided onboard, which can be expanded to 512MB via a single SO-DIMM card slot. Additionally, the unit comes equipped with a 30GB hard disk drive (using the Fast Ultra ATA 100 interface) and has connectivity options including a single RJ45 connection for 10/100 Base TX Ethernet communications, one RS-232 serial port, one IEEE 1284 parallel port, and two USB v1.1 ports for connecting peripherals like external drives, printers, and so on. Additionally, graphics are supported by Intel's Dynamic Memory Video Technology, allowing users to display images up to 1280 x 1024 @ 24-bit color. Finally, an SMB connector allows the user to access the PXI trigger bus for purposes such as trigger input, output, or watchdog timer.
Typical users of the 778824-00 will have run-time measurement applications that require reliable embedded control without the cost of alternative solutions. Applications that use this embedded controller typically involve automated test systems, data logging setups and instrumentation racks that operate under either Windows XP or Windows 2000. Due to its ability to fit into smaller spaces while still allowing for expansion and versatility through its I/O connections, the PXI-8184 is ideal for use in scalable industrial automation applications that require reliable processing capabilities based on PXI technology.
