National Instruments 778842-01 Pentium 4 Embedded Controller for PXI
The NI 778842-01 (PXI-8186) is a great example of how engineers can utilize a modular test and measurement system to embed PC computing capabilities within a PXI or CompactPCI chassis. The controller is based upon a 2.2 GHz Pentium 4-M processor, which has 512 KB of on-die cache. This processor combines the processing elements and peripheral interfaces into one unit that fits into a ruggedized chassis. Since most of the peripherals are connected to this single unit, no space is lost in the chassis for supporting hardware; therefore, the majority of the space is available for data acquisition cards, digitizers, and/or other measurement instrumentation used for analytical tasks or automated testing.
The 778842-01 includes numerous input/output connections, including onboard Ethernet connectivity via 10/100 Base TX. In addition, there are two serial I/O ports utilizing the RS-232 protocol, a parallel I/O port using the IEEE 1284 protocol, and two USB 2.0 ports to connect external drives, printers, and other storage devices. The 778842-01 controller also contains a GPIB port, which meets the IEEE 488.2 standard for connecting directly to laboratory equipment without needing additional interface cards. Finally, there is an SMB connector that may be utilized as either a trigger signal line or a watchdog timer that will allow synchronization of signals from across the PXI Trigger Bus. Graphics processing capability is provided by an integrated Intel Extreme Chipset, so a separate video card is not needed. There is a single slot for accepting a SO-DIMM memory module configured to accept DDR-SDRAM and capable of holding up to 1 GB of memory.
In addition to being able to run Windows XP Professional or Windows 2000 out-of-the-box, the 778842-01 comes pre-loaded with NI-VISA, NI-488, and LabVIEW Real-Time support along with a copy of a recovery image stored on the hard drive that allows you to restore the factory settings if needed. This device operates over the temperature range of 5°C to 40°C, making it suitable for use in laboratories, manufacturing facilities, and other environments where reliable embedded PC function is required.
