National Instruments 778572-94 PXI RF Multiplexer Switch Module
The National Instruments 778572-94 (PXI-2594), a 4 x 1 RF multiplexing switch module, was designed for use in automated test systems built using PXI. These systems require that high-frequency signals be accurately routed throughout the system. As a result, the 778572-94 was designed for 50-ohm impedance characteristics and will support frequency ranges from DC to 2.5 GHz. Engineers can use the module as part of their assembly of scalable automated test equipment systems. The 778572-94 is capable of handling a maximum switching voltage of 30 VDC and a maximum switching current of .5 amps. In addition, it has been tested to handle an additional .5 amp "carry" current and supports RF power up to 10 watts. This part is provided with five female SMA connectors for simple connection to existing RF cable assemblies. System designers should verify their chassis slot types prior to installing the 778572-94, since it is compatible only with PXI Express hybrid and PXI peripheral slots.
For the 778572-94 to perform well in an ATE application, signal integrity (SI) performance is most important. To achieve SI performance, the insertion loss, voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR), and isolation are strictly controlled throughout the switching path. Therefore, signal degradation is minimized. As the relay ages, the DC path resistance increases. Specifically, DC Path Resistance is less than 0.35 ohms at "new" and increases above 1.0 ohm as the relay approaches end of life (EOL). This increase in DC path resistance is due primarily to increased contact resistance versus trace resistance. Also included in the module is Relay Count Tracking. The Relay Count Tracking allows technicians to track the total number of times each relay has switched, providing a method to schedule predictive maintenance and reduce the risk of unplanned downtime during testing.
Examples of typical usage for the 778572-94 are semiconductor validation, RF component characterization, and multi-channel test cells, where a single instrument must interface with multiple devices under test. Included in the shipment of the module is NI Switch Executive software, along with compliance and safety documentation, allowing engineers to configure and routinely calibrate the module. Due to the low-loss construction and frequency range of the 778572-94, it can be used in laboratories and production environments where reliable RF signal switching is necessary for measurement accuracy and overall system throughput.
