National Instruments 777951-04 High-Speed Arbitrary Waveform Generator
The NI 777951-04 (PXI-5411) is an arbitrary waveform generator designed for use in PXI modules, which can generate either a standard waveform using Direct Digital Synthesis (DDS) or a true arbitrary waveform from data loaded onto the module. Arbitrary waveform generation uses a combination of analog-to-digital conversion and digital-to-analog conversion, while a 32-bit DDS accumulator is used for frequency synthesis. Arbitrary waveform generation on this module achieves 12-bit resolution and produces waveforms at rates of up to 40 megahertz. Standard waveforms produced are typically squares, ramps, and triangles. Arbitrary waveform generators like the NI 777951-04 provide engineers with programmable signal sources as part of an automated test system with reliable and repeatable performance. For example, users can produce waveforms such as sine waves with specific frequencies, amplitudes, and phases.
Adjustable output attenuation with fine resolution (0.001 dB) to reach a maximum of 73 dB is provided to support signal quality on the 777951-04. Additionally, the output impedance can be set using software to either 50 Ohms or 75 Ohms. The output stage of the 777951-04 also has short circuit protection. The module will typically have a rise/fall time of approximately 8 ns, which allows fast transition times suitable for many applications requiring pulses/timing-sensitive applications. The digital trigger input accepts TTL-level rising edge signals and defines a delay specification between arbitrary and DDS operating modes, thus providing predictable timing behavior when performing synchronized test sequences.
In addition to being able to provide arbitrary waveform signals, the 777951-04 (PXI-5411) also includes a sync output, which is adjustable with respect to duty cycle, and a marker output, which is user-programmable. The Slave Bus Interface will enable integration of the module into larger PXI chassis configurations. Lastly, the module provides four different operational modes: single-shot mode, continuous mode, burst mode, and stepped generation mode. Each operational mode was designed to support a wide variety of test situations, making this product ideally suited for functional testing, communications validation, radar simulation, and similar applications requiring flexible and/or variable waveform generation in a compact PXI-based instrumentation configuration.
