National Instruments 778539-02 Digital Waveform Generator/Analyzers
The National Instruments 778539-02 (PXI-6552) is a digital waveform generator and analyzer capable of generating waveforms up to 100 MHz for characterizing, validating, and testing digital electronic components in PXI-based environments. The unit features twenty channels of input/output that are programmable by direction per channel, allowing users to designate each line as either an input or output at any time in a test program. Additionally, onboard memory may be configured for one, eight, or sixty-four megabytes per channel, supporting long-term waveform storage, pattern generation, and sequencing. User-programmable scripting features include linking and looping. The programmability of voltage levels (in ten millivolt increments) makes this module suitable for use with a variety of devices and test conditions.
Typically, the 778539-02 is used in conjunction with the NI Digital Waveform Editor, a software application designed specifically for creating, editing, and importing digital waveform patterns without the need for writing code. By combining these two tools, developers of digital tests will find it much easier to develop their digital tests for various applications, including semiconductor characterization, verification of embedded systems, and functional testing of circuits.
A built-in timing engine on the 778539-02 automatically accounts for the propagation delay associated with the DUT and its respective setup and hold times. In addition, the ability to shift clocks greater than 25 MHz allows for even finer timing adjustments of signals. Timing may be sourced from an internal clock or an external reference via the NI PXI-5404.
Each cycle of the part's per-cycle tristate operation supports bidirectional signaling that is required for many protocols that transition between reading and writing. Hardware comparison within the 778539-02 also allows the results of each test to be immediately evaluated for pass/fail based upon expected results rather than having to rely on subsequent analysis. When synchronized using the SMC interface to other digitizers or arbitrary waveform generators, multiple units of the Digital Waveform Generator/Analyzers may be combined together to create highly scalable and multi-channel count mixed-signal test systems that may be utilized in both development and production environments.
