National Instruments 777642-08 PCI Serial Interface Board
The NI 777642-08 is a PCI-232-8 eight-channel serial interface board that will allow you to expand your desktop or industrial computer's PCI bus connection to support up to eight channels of RS-232 serial communication. The 8 serial ports are used for asynchronous communication (RS-232) to connect serial devices such as sensors and controllers. This is a great option when expanding the number of serial communications within an automation and/or data acquisition setup. The power to this board is supplied by the PCI slot, which can provide about 100 mA typical at +5 VDC and up to 180 mA max at +5 VDC, plus 80 mA typical at +12 VDC and up to 800 mA max at +12 VDC. Therefore, there is no need to install an external power source during initial installation.
Each of the eight channels of the 777642-08 PCI-232-8 are available via a single 68-pin SCSI-type connector instead of having each channel separately available via DB-9 connectors. This allows the PCI-232-8 board to be kept small while still allowing access to all eight channels of serial communication. For instrument wiring convenience, a DB-9 breakout cable is included with the interface board. This breakout cable splits the SCSI connector into individual DB-9 cables, which can then be wired directly to instruments. The onboard FIFO buffers for each channel are capable of holding 64 bytes, thus preventing data loss and reducing processor overhead associated with continuous serial transmission. Additionally, the serial interface on the PCI-232-8, part number 777642-08, supports reliable transfer of data at speeds up to 115.2 kbps per port.
To protect against damage caused by ESD, the PCI-232-8 has a 15kV rating for ESD protection on its data lines. Also, the shielded circuitry protects against electrical noise and interference found in many areas, including manufacturing plants and test benches. Since the board installs into a PCI slot and auto-configures with most supported operating systems, the NI 777642-08 is suitable for applications where one board will support several machines in either a control cabinet or instrumentation rack environment, as well as supporting multiple device testing environments.
