PXI-8511/2, 2-Port, PXI CAN Interface Module
National Instruments PXI-8511/2 PXI CAN Interface Module
The NI PXI-8511/2 (Part Number: 780686-02) requires 1 CAN Breakout Box and 2 cables for operation. The CAN Breakout Box that can be used is part number 780041-01 and the cable that can be used is a 9-pin D-SUB female NI CAN No Termination Cable, which is part number 193128-01. The cable is 1 meter in length. This Low-Speed/Fault-Tolerant module has two TJA1054A transceivers, 40 kbits/s minimum baud rate, 2 ports, and does not have an external sync connector. The TJA1054A transceivers can discover and automatically recover from many types of CAN bus errors, such as CAN_L wire interrupted, CAN_H and CAN_L mutually short-circuited, CAN_H short-circuited to ground, and more.
The National Instruments PXI-8511/2 module needs appropriate cabling termination to operate properly. This means the user must put an appropriately specified resistor at both ends of the network. The interfaces on this module have software-selectable termination to make cabling standards as simple as possible. It also helps with enhancing testing capabilities. Since the physical layer of the NI PXI-8511/2 PXI CAN Interface Module is Low-Speed/Fault-Tolerant CAN, this means that the software-selectable termination options are 1.11 kΩ, 4.99 kΩ. The user should also keep in mind that the termination resistors on the cable should be equivalent to the nominal impedance of the cable. ISO 11898 specification necessitates a cable with a nominal impedance of 120 Ω. Therefore, the user should utilize a 120 Ω resistor at both ends of the cable. Every termination resistor must be able to dissipate 0.25 W of power.
