Pickering 40-491-001 Opto-Isolated Digital I/O Module
Pickering's 40-491-001 is a digital I/O (input/output) module with optical isolation used as an interface to connect automation control systems to machines or equipment in the industrial environment. It has 32 digital output ports and 16 digital input ports. One of the most important differences between this module and others is that it uses TTL-compliant threshold levels for its inputs, which means it can be connected directly to digital signals from industrial equipment. All input and output connections on the 40-491-001 have optically isolated input and output channels, isolating the PXI backplane and host controller from electrical interference, voltage surges, and grounding issues typically present in an industrial environment, thus maintaining system reliability and protecting from potential damage.
This module was specifically designed to control low-voltage loads using its high-side FET switch outputs. Outputs are also protected against current overload, voltage overload, and temperature overload during the use of inductive loads such as solenoid coils, power relays, and pneumatic valves. Additionally, the 40-491-001 version of the module includes an internal DC/DC conversion unit providing an internally isolated 5V power supply. Therefore, the need for an additional external isolated logic power supply is eliminated, reducing the complexity of integrating the module into your application. Read and write times for this module are less than 10 milliseconds at moderate speeds, sufficient for a variety of automation applications where high-speed timing is not necessary.
Applications for the Digital I/O Module include product testing, detection of open/closed states of volt-free contact points, and creation of noise-resistant input systems.
