Pickering 40-855-022 Fiber Optic Multiplexer
The Pickering 40-855-022 is a dual-channel PXI fiber optic switch module acting as a 2-to-1 optical multiplexer. This unit houses two slots of the three-slot 3U PXI form factor and contains two independent MEMS (micro-electromechanical-systems)-based switches. The front panel connector type is FC/PC, and the switch module is optimized for single-mode fiber operation over the telecom wavelength band of 1240 to 1640 nm. The core function of this fiber optic switch is using micro-mechanical mirrors that are electrostatically actuated to physically move the light from the common input to the chosen output fiber path in a precise manner.
The 40-855-022 fiber optic module is used for automatic routing of the optical signals and reconfiguration of networks in modern test systems. As well, it is used for testing of fiber optic components. This allows a single test source to be sequentially routed to each device being tested in order to increase the overall throughput and efficiency of the test stations. The MEMS design offers many benefits. They have a typical switching time of less than 1 ms, and they can support in excess of 10 million cycles per operational life, which is suitable for a demanding test floor in production or in a high-end R&D environment. The switch also has good optical characteristics. These include a low insertion loss and a high return loss of greater than 55 dB and a typical crosstalk isolation of -60 dB, which will help minimize any possible interference and degradation of the signal.
Because of its design for ease of integration into a system, the 40-855-022 will operate in any compliant 3U PXI or Compact PCI chassis and can be easily integrated into a variety of test platform configurations. A full range of software drivers are available to support the 40-855-022, including VISA and IVI software drivers to allow users to easily interface the module to popular programming languages such as LabVIEW, MATLAB and Visual Studio. As a result, themultiplexer module represents a versatile tool for developing scalable automated test systems for applications such as validating telecommunications equipment, manufacturing photonic products and testing communication infrastructure networks, all of which require rapid and repeatable management of optical paths to achieve optimal performance and reliability.
