Tektronix P6205 Active FET Probe
The Tektronix P6205 High Frequency Active FET Probe is a precision tool used to measure and analyze circuits at very high speeds. Unlike passive probes, it uses a low load on the circuit being measured to ensure that no distortion occurs when measuring the fastest digital or analog signals. The Tektronix P6205 can be used with all Tektronix oscilloscope models, including the TDS 500, DSA 600, 11000, and CSA 404. The design of the Tektronix P6205 probe employs Field Effect Transistor technology to create a high input impedance of 1MΩ with a capacitance of only 2pF creating an ideal condition for making accurate measurements without affecting the device being tested.
One of the most unique features of the P6205 is the built-in TEKPROBE Level 2 Interface. The TEKPROBE Interface works in conjunction with the oscilloscope to automatically configure the input impedance to 50Ω (the standard value for oscilloscope inputs) and automatically adjust the displayed readout values for the 10 times reduction of amplitude that occurs due to the probe's attenuation factor. If your oscilloscope does not have the TEKPROBE Interface, then you need to purchase a separate Tektronix 1103 power supply to power the probe. However, while the Tektronix 1103 provides the necessary power for the probe, you will not have access to all the automation capabilities of the TEKPROBE Interface. To maintain high-frequency response characteristics of the oscilloscope, you need to terminate the oscilloscope input with a 50Ω termination.
The Tektronix P6205 comes with a wide variety of accessories that make it easier to measure different types of devices. The accessories include a retractable hook tip, a number of ground leads, a low-inductance ground spring, a ground sleeve tip cover, an IC protector tip, and an SMT KilpChip for connecting to surface mount devices. All of these accessories contribute to hands-free operation and minimize ground lead inductance, which is a significant contributor to signal ringing and loss of fidelity at higher frequencies (up to 750MHz). Proper grounding techniques and minimizing inductance in your connections are both stressed as the key to achieving the best possible measurement results with the Tektronix P6205 probe.
