Anritsu MG3694A Synthesized CW Generator
The Anritsu MG3694A is a synthesized continuous-wave signal source optimized for radio frequency (RF) and microwave use, offering a frequency range between 2 and 40 GHz. Optional setups can expand lower-frequency capability to as far as 10 MHz (Option 4 or Option 5) or as low as 0.1 Hz (Option 22) and can be extended out as far as 110 GHz using external millimeter-wave multipliers (54000 series Option 18). The unit is fitted with a K(II)-type output connector and can supply as much as +9 dBm leveled output in the 2–20 GHz and as much as +6 dBm for 20–40 GHz in regular operation. In High-Power use when Option 15 is applied, output is increased to +15 dBm for 2–10 GHz, +12 dBm for 10–20 GHz, and +14 dBm for 20–40 GHz.
The MG3694A supports precise phase-locked step sweeps at a resolution of 0.01 Hz, analogue sweeps (Option 6) and list sweeps for complex frequency/power sequencing. It includes 20 programmable marker channels and supports switching times below 40 ms for frequency variations. The phase noise performance at 20–40 GHz is measured at -60 dBc/Hz at a 100 Hz offset and at -75 dBc/Hz at a 1 kHz offset, and this is improved to -63 dBc/Hz and -92 dBc/Hz when using Option 3 (Ultra-Low Phase Noise).
The modulation features include external frequency, phase (Option 12), amplitude (Option 14), and pulse modulation (Option 13); yet, internal modulation requires additional low-frequency or pulse generators (Options 23/24). The unit is equipped with a 10 MHz reference/set input/output for synchronizing and allows for external leveling via use of detectors or power metering. The unit is remotely controllable via GPIB, while rear-panel interface includes AUX I/O, SERIAL, and dedicated ports for use in modulation.
The uses of this unit include component characterization, satellite communications, and radar testing. It features user-level flatness correction to prevent external path loss, and it includes the option for relocatable rear-panel output (Option 9) or internal power monitoring capability (Option 8). As a millimeter-wave system application tool, the MG3694A features external multiplication via dedicated bias output (Option 18) for synthesized accuracy up to 110 GHz. Its portability, compliance with MIL-PRF-28800F environmental standards, and features for automated setup for testing make it suitable for laboratory and field situations requiring repeat and highly precise signal generation.
