Keysight N5183A MXG Microwave Analog Signal Generator
The Keysight N5183A MXG Microwave Analog Signal Generator is an advanced piece of equipment specially designed to generate high-frequency signals in challenging manufacturing and test applications. The equipment has multiple frequencies that it can operate with on a 100 kHz to 20 GHz, 31.8 GHz, or 40 GHz basis, depending on specific configurations, and is designed to supply an output of +18 dBm or less in order to compensate for system losses in its use in microwave applications. The generator has fast switching in terms of frequency at ≤900 µs and amplitude at ≤5 ms in order to allow increased throughput in automated test situations. Its 2U footprint supports rack-based installations in multiple applications such as local oscillator replacement, TWT amplifier testing, and measuring antennas.
The N5183A delivers high spectral integrity with a low phase noise of -113 dBc/Hz versus 20 kHz offset with a 1 GHz carrier frequency and harmonic suppression to -56 dBc. Its advanced modulation capabilities include analog frequency modulation (FM), amplitude modulation (AM), phase modulation, and pulse modulation (with multiple options) to support the simulation of complex signal distortions. The pulse modulation capabilities can create pulses with rise and fall times less than 10 nanoseconds and on/off ratios greater than 80 dB critical to radar and communications environments testing. The digital sweep functions support simultaneous frequency and amplitude sweeps with list and step operational capabilities that can support up to 65,535 points for accurate waveform construction.
Designed to be reliable, the N5183A generator consists of five pre-calibrated modules in a plug-and-play package to minimize downtime in service. Legacy support of Agilent and third-party signal generators preserves software investments with software languages on the HP/Agilent 8360/8370 platform and R&S SMR platform. Remote control is supported using GPIB, LAN, or USB interfaces to standards-based SCPI to integrate easily into automation systems.
MXG's onboard reference oscillator is ±1 ppm accurate between temperature extremes and features external reference ports (1–50 MHz with Option 1ER) to enable multi-instrument synchronization. Precision 2.4 mm or Type-N front panel outputs are provided with external modulation, trigger input, and ALC leveling on the rear panel. Applications that require accurate stimulus signals to probe devices like filters, amplifiers, and mixers in real-world applications include aerospace, defense, and telecommunications.
