Keysight/Agilent L4421A Armature Multiplexer
The L4421A multi-multiplexers are designed to be space-efficient solutions for automated testing systems that require data acquisition. These devices feature embedded Ethernet in order to enable the placement of the device near the source of signals to reduce the amount of cabling and noise generated by cables.
The L4421A has 40 channels of data acquisition. Each channel utilizes a two-wire latched-armature relay, which provides "break-before-make" operation when closing a channel. As a result, there is no possibility of creating an unintended electrical connection (i.e., a short) when moving from one channel to another. Users may also choose to close multiple channels simultaneously in order to define a custom routing configuration. Channels 41-44 provide four additional fused inputs to support the measurement of up to 1 Amp each, providing the capability to measure both AC and DC currents directly with an external digital multimeter (DMM) without requiring external shunt resistor(s).
For temperature-measurement applications, the L4421A includes an integral thermocouple-reference junction located on the terminal block of the unit. Utilizing this reference junction with an external DMM reduces the thermal offsets associated with measuring temperatures utilizing thermocouples. In addition to monitoring the number of times the relays have been closed (relay counter), the user-defined sequence allows the user to assign names to specific routines that perform more-complex routing functions. Trigger inputs connect externally to allow synchronization of advancing channel numbers with measurement event timing; as a result, the L4421A supports scan rates of up to 100 channels per second for various types of tests such as functional tests, design verification, and general scan operations.
Ethernet connectivity is achieved using two rugged 50-pin D-sub connectors with gold-plated contacts to enable repeatable measurement results. Terminal blocks are provided for easy-to-use detachable connections. Cable kits and mass-interconnects are available for use with these connectors.
Password-protected web-browser-based remote access is enabled over the Ethernet port; therefore, users do not need to install any special software in order to utilize this feature. An external DMM is able to communicate with the L4421A using hardware handshakes via a channel-closed-trigger-output and/or channel-advance-trigger-input. Standard IVI and LabVIEW drivers along with direct SCPI commands make it easier to integrate the L4421A into mixed-vendor systems.
