Keysight/Agilent L4451A 4-Channel D/A Converter with Waveform Memory
The L4451A from Keysight/Agilent is a four-channel digital-to-analog (D/A) converter based on LXI Class C. It has the capability to hold waveform data as well as use its Ethernet connection to enable placement in the vicinity of loads. Due to the fact that the four channels of this unit are galvanically isolated from each other, they can produce either ±16 volts or ±20 milliamps DC with sixteen-bit resolution. During operations the gain and offset may be adjusted on a per-channel basis. In addition to enabling users to stack channels together for increased swing range due to the isolation, these characteristics also allow for users to source precision biasing voltages to their devices under test, control programmable power supplies, and provide analog set points for industrial control loops. Calibration through an electronic method using an external digital multimeter (DMM) and the CAL command eliminates mechanical adjustments.
In addition to storing waveforms created by users, the 500,000-point onboard memory allows the storage of up to thirty-two predefined waveforms, which can be dynamically shared across any number of outputs. The predefined waveforms consist of sine, square, and ramp shapes. Arbitrary waveforms created by users can fill the entire depth of the memory. Streaming of waveforms occurs at rates of up to 200 kilosamples/sec when used in point-to-point mode. In addition to being a separate module within the device, the internal clock contains individual dividers for each channel. Therefore, all channels will play back their respective waveforms simultaneously and on time, allowing for coordinated multi-channel analog stimulus for both functional tests and hardware-in-the-loop simulation. Additionally, the architecture of the L4451A supports dynamic signal generation for sequential waveform generation and multi-tone testing.
In order to configure and monitor remotely over Ethernet, a built-in graphical web interface was added to the L4451A. Drivers for most popular programming environments, LAN sockets, and an optional GPIB interface were developed using the Keysight IO Libraries Suite. With 30 microinches of gold plating on the fifty-pin D-sub connector, signal integrity is assured. Accessories such as detachable terminal blocks, cable kits, and mass-interconnect solutions have been provided to make integration into your test system easier. Overall, the L4451A represents a good combination of four isolated high-voltage analog outputs, deep waveform memory, and native Ethernet-based control; thus, it would represent a strong choice for automated test systems and industrial control applications where synchronous multi-channel analog stimulation is required.
