Newport ILX Lightwave LDC-3916332 Dual Laser Current Source Module
The Newport ILX Lightwave LDC-3916332 is a laser diode current source module that has been specifically designed to integrate with a multi-channel chassis (the LDC-3916). The LDC-3916332 has 2 totally isolated channels of laser diode current output capability, each of which can provide up to 500 mA of current to the laser diodes that are connected to them. As such, the LDC-3916332 was created for users who require precise and stable current drive capabilities to their laser diodes, and wish to do so from a very compact instrument. System integrators can house the Laser Current Source Module within the 16 slot LDC-3916 chassis, creating a centralized control system for numerous laser diodes, thereby maximizing rack space and simplifying the setup process for complex automated processes.
This module includes many features for controlling laser diodes, such as high precision and low noise levels, features that are important for maintaining both the performance and the reliability of the laser diodes being controlled. The LDC-3916332 has several control methods, which include constant current and constant optical power using an internal photodiode feedback loop. In addition, the module allows for external analog modulation at frequencies of up to 1.2 MHz for smaller signals. Critical to the safe operation of the laser is the ability to independently set current and voltage limits for each laser channel. Also, the LDC-3916332 includes slow start circuitry to protect against excessive current flow when turning the laser on.
In terms of remote operation, the LDC-3916332 has both GPIB and RS-232 ports to allow for seamless integration into existing automated test systems and manufacturing systems. Due to the modular nature of the LDC-3916 system, if additional modules need to be added or removed from the system, there will be no need to recertify the entire mainframe. Therefore, the LDC-3916332 provides a highly scalable and adaptable method to provide reliable control of laser diodes for use in applications such as optical amplifier testing, multi-laser burn-in systems and as a dependable current source for DWDM signal source banks.
