VIAVI NAV-402AP Avionics Test Set
Originally from the manufacturer Aeroflex, the NAV-402AP from VIAVI is a full-featured, self-contained avionics test equipment that is specifically designed for the calibration and functional verification of all aircraft navigation and communications systems. The device is a synthesized signal generator for MKR, VOR, LOC, Glide Slope, and VHF COMM avionics in either fixed or variable frequency mode. The Category I, II, and III Instrument Landing Systems (ILS) calibration and functional verification are critical to ensure that these systems will operate accurately and reliably. The small size allows the technician to use this test equipment on the flight deck or in the maintenance hangar, thereby providing a flexible means for ground-based testing.
The VIAVI NAV-402AP produces precise radio frequency signals within each of the major frequency ranges of 72 MHz to 337 MHz with the capability to adjust the output level from -7 dBm to -110 dBm. The primary reference source of the test equipment is a high-stability 1 ppm TCXO master oscillator, which ensures excellent frequency accuracy. The basic testing functions include the ability to generate both LOC and GS simultaneously, sweep the LOC DDM for evaluating autopilot capture, and select the VOR bearing with 0.1-degree resolution. In addition, the display of the internal counter can be used to show the generator frequency, measure the frequency of an external COMM transmitter up to 300 MHz, or verify a selected VOR bearing. The internal RF power meter may be used to measure the power output of the COMM transmitter from 0 to 100 watts.
For detailed system analysis, the NAV-402AP has the capability to accurately generate and measure the modulation of the navigation tones. The unit generates the navigation tones using digital techniques, with the 90 Hz and 150 Hz phase-locked signals being derived for LOC and GS modulation, respectively, and are adjustable in exact increments. The unit also allows for the calibration of the centering of the LOC and GS systems from the front panel and provides specific DDM values for flag testing. The unit is powered by an internal NiCad battery or AC supply and is capable of operating over a wide temperature range and is therefore a ruggedized asset for technicians performing maintenance, troubleshooting, and preflight checks of aircraft navigation systems.
