VIAVI HST3000 VoIP Service Interface Module
VIAVI’s HST3000 is a portable, handheld field instrument used for installing and maintaining Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP). As a diagnostic tool, this multi-functional device enables technicians to verify connections to services, evaluate call quality and diagnose problems throughout VoIP-based networks. It is primarily used in the field for service provisioning and problem-solving by service providers and network installers; thus, the device helps to ensure that all aspects of VoIP based installations meet quality and reliability standards prior to handing off the services to customers. The HST3000 is also used as an emulation tool of an IP telephone to interact with different components of the network thereby providing a method to verify VoIP-based services from end to end.
The HST3000 has several core capabilities such as making and receiving test calls on many of the common VoIP signaling protocols (SIP, SCCP, MGCP, H.323 and Nortel Unistim); analyzing the quality of the voice received during a call by measuring the delay of packets, the variation of the time between packets (jitter) and packet loss; and producing an objective rating of quality (Mean Opinion Score (MOS) or R-Factor) and/or a subjective rating of quality (Mean Opinion Score (MOS) or R-Factor) to immediately verify that the voice quality of the VoIP service is satisfactory. In addition, the HST3000 can provide real-time decoding of the signals exchanged between VoIP devices and produce error messages to quickly diagnose why calls cannot be established. Also included are common IP diagnostic tools (ping and traceroute) to quickly analyze the paths available for data transmission through the network.
Another key area of increased productivity for the HST3000 is its AutoAnswer capability that enables a single technician to conduct full two-way call quality testing across a VoIP network. The Service Interface Module also includes a modular hardware and software design that allows for upgrades and additions to the product, which have allowed the development of additional service interface modules supporting other technologies such as xDSL, Ethernet and T1/E1. The HST3000 is built to withstand the rigors of harsh field environments and can operate for extended periods without needing to be recharged, and the user interface is easy to use and supports scripted automated tests to facilitate standardization of processes, reduced training time and minimized operator errors.
