Keysight/Agilent E6500A VXI Based Tuner
The E6500A from Keysight (formerly from Agilent) is a VXI based tuner module designed for signal reception from 20 MHz to 1000 MHz. It is built for integration into VXI mainframes used in automated RF monitoring and signal analysis. The module supports 1 Hz tuning resolution across its entire operating frequency range. The synthesizer tuning speed of the tuner is 1 ms at the 10 kHz resolution bandwidth setting. It achieves 2 ms at the 1 kHz setting and 4 ms at the 100 Hz resolution setting. The internal OCXO reference provides a frequency accuracy of 1 × 10?? per year for stable operation. The overall receiver sweep speed of the tuner reaches 2.8 GHz per second at 10.4 kHz resolution bandwidth. This is achieved using 4k FFTs over successive 8 MHz spans across the full frequency range. The RF input uses an SMA connector with 50 ohm impedance and a 2:1 input VSWR characteristic. The maximum average continuous RF input power without causing damage is rated at +20 dBm.
The RF input attenuation on the VXI Tuner is adjustable from 0 to 30 dB in 10 dB steps. The maximum recommended operating level is – 20 dBm at 0 dB attenuation and + 10 dBm at 30 dB. The image rejection is specified at 95 dB and IF rejection is rated at 90 dB. These figures ensure strong signal selectivity and reduced interference in environments with high signal density. The analog gain control system of the E6500A VXI Tuner supports both manual and autoranging modes for flexible RF input handling. The input range settings span – 48 dBm to 0 dBm in 2 dB steps with overrange to + 12 dBm. The overall gain control range covers 150 dB including RF attenuation, ADC dynamic range and autoranging. The autoranging attack time is less than 1 µs and decay time is under 2.9 ms. The adjustable ALC range of the tuner exceeds 100 dB and maintains audio output levels within 25 % of full scale. The ALC response time is adjustable in 1 µs steps spanning a range of 1 µs to 10 seconds. These parameters support accurate and reliable demodulation across USB, LSB and ISB signal modes.
