Keysight/Agilent E8483A C-Size Microwave Switch/Step Attenuator Driver
The E8483A from Keysight (formerly from Agilent) is a 2-slot register based VXI module designed to drive microwave switches and step attenuators. It provides dedicated control drive and power circuitry for managing both microwave switch and attenuator device types. The driver can accommodate up to three single pole multithrow microwave switches installed directly within the module housing. The switches and attenuators can alternatively be mounted at an external location closer to the device under test. The attenuator driver provides six 16 pin DIP sockets for connecting up to six microwave switches to the module. The six additional 10 pin DIP sockets are also included for connecting up to six programmable step attenuators. The module delivers + 24 V drive signals to control the 87104/06 Series microwave switches with precision.
The Microwave Switch/Step Attenuator Driver operates across a frequency range of DC to 26.5 GHz using SMA connector interfaces. A 50 Ω impedance rating ensures proper signal matching and minimal loss across the full operating frequency range. The power handling is rated at 1 W average and 50 W peak for diverse RF test scenarios. The life and repeatability of the model are specified at 5 × 10? cycles.
The driver is classified as a register based A16 slave only VXI device that occupies two C size chassis slots. The backplane communication is established through integrated P1/P2 connectors that link the driver to the VXI system. Each slot dissipates a maximum of 15 W and requires an airflow rate of 1.2 liters per second. A differential pressure of 0.08 mm H?O is required which aligns with standard VXI chassis cooling specifications.
The E8483A Microwave Switch/Step Attenuator Driver draws 0.1 A on the + 5 V supply rail for both IPM and IDM operating currents. On the + 24 V rail, the module draws 1.2 A for IPM and 0.1 A for IDM. All other supply rails including ± 12 V, − 24 V, − 5.2 V and − 2 V carry zero current draw. This focused power consumption profile allows the attenuator driver to operate efficiently within standard VXI chassis power constraints.
