The 777561-01 by National Instruments is an AT-GPIB-TNT plug-and-play ISA (Industry Standard Architecture) interface that includes an IEEE 488 bus for PCs. The board is centered around National Instruments' TNT family application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC). The 777561-01 provides all functions as defined by IEEE 488.2 (talker, listener, and controller) but does not require manual setting of jumpers or dip switches. Instead, at start-up, supported systems will determine their input/output (I/O) addresses, direct memory access (DMA) channels, and interrupts; other non-supported systems can be configured by means of the NI-PNP software tool. As such, there are no manual configurations necessary for this type of ISA hardware, resulting in faster installations and fewer errors due to user misconfigurations.
This board was designed for use in demanding testing and measurement applications. The 777561-01 supports data transfer rates greater than 1.5 megabytes/sec via the standard IEEE 488.1 three-wire handshake method. It is compliant with High Speed GPIB (HS488) as specified in ANSI/IEEE Std 488.1-2003 and achieves maximum data transfer rates of up to 8 megabytes/sec. However, when communicating with a listener device that cannot support high-speed transfers via HS488, it will fall back to the standard interlocked three-wire handshake method, thereby enabling continuous communication even when operating within a mixed environment of devices supporting different levels of performance. The actual throughput will depend upon many factors, including the type of processor used in the host computer, how it has been configured, and the capabilities of the various instrumentation connected to the board.
As a plug-and-play ISA device, the 777561-01 will allow operation with other legacy ISA cards installed in the same system; however, manual conflict resolution may be necessary in some cases. As such, this card will find application among industrial automation engineers, test system integrators, and laboratory technicians who require reliable GPIB connectivity for instrument control, data acquisition, and automated test configurations.
