National Instruments 776667-01 Serial-to-GPIB Interface
NI’s 776667-01 is an A-type GPIB/serial (RS-232) interface device (GPIB-232CT-A). It connects RS-232 serial devices to the IEEE 488 GPIB bus and can be used in a variety of test and measurement applications to connect a PC with a standard RS-232 serial connection to the GPIB. Also, this unit has the capability to support the direct interfacing of RS-232-based instruments and peripherals to the GPIB, which provides a single, cost-effective solution for those laboratories or manufacturing environments that have both GPIB and serial connections.
This unit includes the required firmware and logic to meet both the IEEE 488 and RS-232 standards physically and electrically; therefore, no additional software drivers are needed from the host computer. The 776667-01 will receive GPIB command data through the RS-232 serial interface and process these commands into GPIB signals that are then transmitted back to the GPIB bus using internal GPIB-to-RS-232 protocol translation. The GPIB-232CT-A 776667-01 fully complies with IEEE 488.2, and the onboard NAT4882 controller chip controls all of the Talker, Listener, and Controller functions at the hardware level. Because this unit performs the higher-level protocol translation internally, it does not require communication with the host computer’s operating system (OS), thereby allowing users to run their application programs on a wide variety of existing legacy and new OS platforms.
Both AC and DC versions of the GPIB-232CT-A part number 776667-01 are offered. The AC version of the unit may accept either 100 – 120 VAC or 220 – 240 VAC at 50 – 60 Hertz. The current drawn by the unit when connected to either one of these two voltages is 55 mA and 45 mA, respectively, along with corresponding fuse ratings for each of these two voltage ranges. The DC version of the unit requires a regulated input ranging from +5 to +13 VDC @ a minimum of 700 mA. Both wall-mount and desktop-type power supplies are provided for both 100 – 120 VAC and 220 – 240 VAC inputs. Therefore, the user can select either an AC or DC version of the 776667-01 depending upon whether they need to deploy this unit in a facility located outside the U.S.A. or within the U.S.A. or in a fixed location such as a lab bench or in a rack configuration.
